Controlling Critters  what we do on a daily basis. Squirrels in attics or in chimneys are a common problem in Alexandria Virginia.

15 years experience

After we remove raccoons and or squirrels from your chimney we recommend a commercially made cap. When we remove raccoons from tour attic we find an appropriate method of closing the entrance. Most raccoons enter the attic through the attic fan or through rotten wood.

If the raccoon enters through rotten wood, we cover it with sheet metal so it cannot ever get back inside. All raccoon and squirrel jobs come with a free attic inspection.

Snakes

Since Adam and Eve the snake has had a bad reputation and to this day it still strikes horror in most of our community. There are many snakes in our area only 4 venomous species all of which are truly dangerous. The three in the viper family are the copper head, water moccasin, and of course the famous rattle snake. These three snakes have long fangs which are characteristic of the viper family and can strike to envenomate prey or victim roughly 1/3 of their body length. Unfortunately many of the snake bite victims are bitten because they were attempting to handle or kill the snake. Most times these snakes will warn an individual by rattling their tail as a defense mechanism to signify they are dangerous and want to be left alone. More times than not if you leave the snake alone, you will not get bitten. Of course there are many cases of a victim accidentally stepping on or too close to a snake that has not been seen and is bitten. The vipers all inject a hemo-toxin. This type of toxin attacks the blood and soft tissue at the site of the bite and often times infection sets in immediately. Many bites are not fatal but some are. The other venomous snake in our area, the coral snake, is not very common, is very colorful, and is also the most and least dangerous at the same time. How is this? It is the most dangerous because it injects a neuro-toxin that attacks the nerves. Permanent damage can occur and recovery can be very long and painful. And since this particular snake is so rare and bites even more so the anti venom is often times not carried by many local hospitals. However it is the least dangerous due to the size and location of their fangs. Unlike the vipers, a coral snake’s fangs are located in the back of their very small mouth. And considering the have a very small mouth with very small fangs in the back of their mouth, they cannot easily bite an adult. If they were being handled they can envenomate between the fingers in the webbing or if a child were to step on one or handle one they may have a better chance of a successful bite but again their bites are very rare. The diets of the copper head and rattle snake consist mainly of rodents, frogs, and birds. The water moccasin is a very opportunistic feeder and in addition to these will feed on fish as well. The coral snake due to the small mouth feeds mainly on small lizards, small frogs, insects, and occasionally a small mouse. Most snakes in our community are non-venomous and perform the important and dirty job of helping keep the rodent population under control. Rodents carry many disease and many house fires are due to rodents chewing electrical wiring so if we believed all snakes were bad and killed them all, we would soon realize how important snakes are to our ecosystem. But snakes can be dangerous and considering this fact, if there is a snake in your home or property and you cannot positively identify the species, it is best to treat all snakes as if they are venomous and stay away and call a professional snake removal specialist. We can remove the snake from your home, identify how it got in and seal all entry points so this does not happen again, and we guarantee our work. We can also discuss the habitat around your home and often times can identify why the snakes are attracted to your area and recommend options for habitat modification. We will never  be able to “get rid” of all snakes in our community. Fact is we need them here. But we can make certain areas less desireable for them. So if you have a snake problem give us a call. We can help and often times we can be there immediately!
